YABATECH OND, HND Courses, Admission, School Fees and Life at Yaba College of Technology

There is something different about walking through the gates of Yaba College of Technology. The institution carries a weight of history that you feel before you even open a textbook. Established in 1947, YABATECH is older than the Nigerian nation itself, and in that time it has quietly produced some of the country’s finest engineers, most celebrated artists, sharpest accountants, and most technically capable graduates across dozens of disciplines. If you are trying to decide whether YABATECH is the right institution for your 2026 academic journey, this article gives you the full, unfiltered picture — courses, admission, fees, campus life, and everything else that matters.

What Kind of Institution Is YABATECH?

YABATECH is a federal polytechnic, which means it is funded by the federal government and supervised by the National Board for Technical Education. Like all polytechnics in Nigeria, it awards the Ordinary National Diploma at the end of a two-year programme and the Higher National Diploma at the end of a further two-year programme. These qualifications are fully recognised for employment, professional certification, and further academic study including university admission through Direct Entry.

What sets YABATECH apart from other polytechnics is not just its age but its location. Sitting in the middle of Yaba, Lagos — an area that has become Nigeria’s technology and creative industry hub — YABATECH students have access to internship and industry exposure that polytechnics in less commercially active cities simply cannot replicate. The proximity to tech startups, media companies, financial institutions, engineering firms, and design agencies means that YABATECH graduates often enter professional life with real industry experience already behind them.

Schools and Departments at YABATECH

YABATECH organises its programmes across several schools. Each school covers a cluster of related disciplines and houses multiple departments that deliver the OND and HND programmes.

The School of Art, Design and Printing is arguably the most distinctive in the polytechnic. Art and Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Photography and Printing Technology, and Textile Design Technology are the main programmes here. This school has produced a remarkable number of Nigeria’s leading creative professionals — people who now run advertising agencies, design studios, fashion brands, and publishing houses. If your interest is in the visual and creative industries, this is one of the best places in the country to build that foundation.

The School of Engineering is the largest and most traditional of YABATECH’s schools. Civil Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, and Welding and Offshore Technology are all housed here. The engineering programmes are accredited and maintain strong links with industries across Lagos and the wider South-West region.

The School of Environmental Studies covers Architecture, Building Technology, Estate Management, Quantity Surveying, and Urban and Regional Planning. Lagos’s status as one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities makes these disciplines particularly relevant, and graduates from this school are in strong demand across real estate, construction, and urban development sectors.

The School of Management and Business Studies is where candidates interested in Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Marketing, Insurance, and Public Administration will find their programmes. These are consistently among the most popular OND programmes at YABATECH because of how directly they connect to employment opportunities across Lagos’s dense business ecosystem.

The School of Science and Computer Studies houses Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics, Science Laboratory Technology, and Statistics. Computer Science at YABATECH has grown rapidly in relevance as Lagos’s tech industry has expanded and the programme produces graduates who enter software development, data analysis, and systems administration roles.

The School of Technology covers Food Technology, Hospitality Management, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Polymer Technology. These programmes serve niche but important industries and graduates consistently find opportunities in food production, hospitality, and materials science sectors.

OND Admission Requirements at YABATECH

Getting into YABATECH for the OND programme requires candidates to go through JAMB. There is no bypass around this — every OND applicant must sit for the UTME and choose YABATECH as their institution. The minimum JAMB cut off mark for YABATECH is typically set at 100 for most OND programmes though the institution’s own internal threshold for specific departments can be higher based on applicant volume.

Beyond the JAMB score, candidates need a minimum of five O’Level credits from WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB in subjects relevant to their chosen programme. English Language is compulsory for all programmes. For engineering courses, credits in Mathematics and Physics are non-negotiable. For management and business programmes, Mathematics and at least three business-related subjects are typically required. For art and design programmes, candidates with art-related O’Level subjects have an advantage and some departments may request a portfolio of creative work.

Results from not more than two sittings are accepted by YABATECH. Candidates who have their results spread across more than two exam sessions will face challenges meeting this requirement.

HND Admission at YABATECH

The Higher National Diploma at YABATECH is a two-year programme for candidates who have already completed an OND in a related field. HND candidates do not sit for JAMB UTME but apply through the JAMB Direct Entry system. The minimum OND grade required for HND admission at YABATECH is Lower Credit. Upper Credit holders are more competitive, particularly for popular departments like Computer Science, Accountancy, and Electrical Engineering.

HND candidates must also have the relevant O’Level credits that would have been required for the OND in their field. The specific OND discipline must be sufficiently related to the HND programme being applied for. For instance, an OND in Electrical Engineering Technology is an appropriate route to HND in Electrical Engineering Technology, while an OND in Business Administration would not typically qualify for HND in Engineering.

YABATECH Part-Time Programmes

One of YABATECH’s most socially valuable offerings is its School of Part-Time Studies. This allows working adults, people who missed the full-time admission window, and candidates who prefer a flexible study schedule to pursue OND and HND qualifications without abandoning their existing commitments. Part-time programmes at YABATECH typically run for a longer calendar period than full-time programmes to accommodate the reduced weekly contact hours.

The part-time route covers many of the same disciplines available in the full-time programmes including Accountancy, Business Administration, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering Technology, and others. Admission requirements are similar to the full-time route in terms of O’Level credentials though the JAMB requirement may differ for part-time candidates. Candidates interested in part-time admission should check the current requirements directly on the official YABATECH website at www.yabatech.edu.ng.

YABATECH School Fees in 2026

As a federal polytechnic, YABATECH school fees are regulated and are generally lower than what private polytechnics and private universities charge. The fees are reviewed periodically and the current schedule for each programme is published on the institution’s portal at the beginning of each academic session.

School fees at YABATECH vary by programme and level. Engineering and technology programmes typically carry slightly higher fees than management and arts programmes. Part-time programme fees also differ from full-time rates. Fresh students pay a combination of tuition, registration, library, and other institutional levies in their first semester.

YABATECH Portal and Admission Process

All YABATECH admission activities are conducted through the institution’s official portal. When the admission window opens, eligible candidates who listed YABATECH on JAMB can begin their application on the portal. The portal handles application submission, fee payment, document upload, and result checking. Fresh students who receive admission offers proceed through the portal to complete their registration, pay acceptance fees, and register for their first semester courses.

Industrial Training at YABATECH

Industrial Training, commonly called IT, is a compulsory component of both OND and HND programmes at YABATECH. Students spend a defined period working in industry-related organisations as a supervised practical training exercise. The IT period for OND students is typically one semester long and for HND students is also one semester. YABATECH’s Industrial Training and Liaison Unit coordinates placements and supervises students during the training period.

For YABATECH students, the IT experience is often one of the most professionally formative parts of their programme. The Lagos location means placements with genuinely active companies rather than token attachments to organisations with nothing meaningful for students to do.

Life on the YABATECH Campus

The YABATECH campus in Yaba is compact but vibrant. Student organisations, departmental associations, religious fellowships, and cultural groups make up a busy extracurricular landscape. The campus is surrounded by some of Lagos’s most interesting commercial and social activity — from Yaba Market and its tech-focused stalls to the coffee shops, co-working spaces, and food spots that have sprung up around the area as part of Lagos’s creative economy.

Campus hostel accommodation at YABATECH is limited and demand far exceeds supply. Most students live off-campus in surrounding neighbourhoods including Sabo, Yaba, Oyingbo, and Surulere. Off-campus accommodation costs vary widely depending on proximity to the campus and the quality of the facility.

Is YABATECH a Good Choice in 2026?

For any candidate who wants a technical education with real industry relevance in a city that rewards technical skill, YABATECH is not just a good choice — it is one of the best choices available at the polytechnic level in Nigeria. Its age, its location, its alumni network, and the depth of its programmes combine to make it an institution whose graduates consistently outperform their peers from newer and less established technical institutions.

The OND and HND from YABATECH carry genuine market weight. Employers in Lagos and beyond recognise the YABATECH brand and many actively recruit from the institution. For candidates who want a qualification that opens professional doors while also providing the option to continue to a university degree through Direct Entry, YABATECH delivers on both counts.
