University of Lagos (UNILAG) 2026/2027 Complete Student Guide

There are universities in Nigeria and then there is UNILAG. The University of Lagos occupies a category of its own in the Nigerian higher education landscape not because it is perfect, but because of what it represents to the millions of candidates who choose it as their first choice on JAMB every single year. It sits in the middle of Lagos, Nigeria’s most economically consequential city, which means that simply being a student there places you inside one of the most professionally stimulating environments on the African continent. Internships, industry connections, campus recruitment drives, and the kind of incidental professional education that only a megacity can provide all of this comes with the UNILAG experience before a single lecture is attended.

But beyond the geography and the reputation, UNILAG is a serious academic institution. Established in 1962, it has built faculties, research centres, and a teaching hospital that collectively represent one of the most comprehensive university infrastructures in Nigeria. For candidates making admission decisions in 2026, understanding what UNILAG actually offers — its full academic portfolio, its admission process, what it costs, and what life on campus is genuinely like — is the purpose of this guide.

The History Behind the Institution

The University of Lagos was established by an Act of Parliament in 1962, two years after Nigerian independence. The federal government’s intention was to create a world-class university in Nigeria’s commercial capital that would serve the manpower development needs of a newly independent nation. From its founding, UNILAG was conceived as a comprehensive university that would cover the full range of academic disciplines from the humanities and social sciences to engineering, medicine, and law.

In the six decades since its establishment, UNILAG has grown from a relatively small institution with a few hundred students into one of Nigeria’s largest universities with tens of thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate students spread across twelve faculties, several institutes, and a major teaching hospital. It has maintained accreditation for its programmes from the National Universities Commission and from international professional bodies in fields like engineering, medicine, law, and accounting.

UNILAG’s alumni network is one of the most powerful in Nigeria. It spans virtually every major profession and includes some of the country’s most prominent figures in business, law, medicine, academia, entertainment, and public service. This network is not just a source of institutional pride — it is an active professional resource that current students and recent graduates can tap into for mentorship, employment, and career opportunities.

Faculties and Courses at UNILAG

UNILAG operates through twelve faculties that together cover an impressive range of academic disciplines. Each faculty houses multiple departments and offers undergraduate degree programmes that are fully accredited and recognised for professional practice.

The Faculty of Arts is home to departments including English, History and Strategic Studies, Philosophy, Linguistics and African Languages, and Creative Arts. This faculty produces graduates who go into teaching, the media, public service, the creative industries, and postgraduate study in the humanities. The Creative Arts department in particular has produced many of Nigeria’s most celebrated playwrights, musicians, and performance artists.

The Faculty of Business Administration covers Accounting, Actuarial Science, Business Administration, Finance, and Insurance and Actuarial Science. This is one of the most sought-after faculties at UNILAG given Lagos’s role as Nigeria’s commercial and financial capital. Graduates from this faculty are heavily recruited by banks, accounting firms, insurance companies, and consulting organisations both in Lagos and nationally.

The Faculty of Education trains educational professionals across specialisations including Adult Education, Educational Administration, Guidance and Counselling, Human Kinetics, and Physical Education. The faculty prepares graduates for careers in school administration, curriculum development, educational psychology, and teacher training at the tertiary level.

The Faculty of Engineering houses some of the most competitive undergraduate programmes at the university. Departments include Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Surveying and Geoinformatics. Engineering programmes at UNILAG are accredited by COREN and consistently produce graduates who are highly sought after by engineering firms, oil and gas companies, and technology organisations.

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences covers Architecture, Building, Estate Management, Quantity Surveying, and Urban and Regional Planning. Lagos’s extraordinary pace of urban growth makes these disciplines particularly relevant and graduates find strong employment demand in real estate development, construction management, architectural practice, and urban planning at state and federal levels.

The Faculty of Law at UNILAG is one of the most prestigious in Nigeria. The LLB programme is highly competitive and produces graduates who proceed to the Nigerian Law School and go on to careers in legal practice, the judiciary, academia, corporate law, and public administration. The faculty also runs postgraduate programmes in various areas of legal specialisation.

The Faculty of Medicine operates in close conjunction with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and covers programmes including Medicine and Surgery, Physiotherapy, Nursing, and Dental Surgery. Medicine at UNILAG is among the most competitive and most prestigious medical programmes in Nigeria. The Lagos University Teaching Hospital provides the clinical training environment and serves as one of the major referral hospitals in Lagos State.

The Faculty of Pharmacy offers the five-year B.Pharm programme leading to qualification as a licensed pharmacist. Pharmacy at UNILAG is consistently oversubscribed and produces graduates who go into clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical manufacturing, drug regulation, and community pharmacy practice.

The Faculty of Science houses Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Marine Sciences, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology. Science graduates from UNILAG find opportunities in research, the technology sector, healthcare, banking and data analysis, and academia. Computer Science in particular has grown in employment demand as Lagos’s technology industry has expanded.

The Faculty of Social Sciences covers Economics, Geography, Mass Communication, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Mass Communication at UNILAG is one of the most popular and most competitive programmes in the university. Its graduates populate Nigeria’s media industry from broadcast television and radio to digital platforms and advertising agencies.

UNILAG Cut Off Mark for 2026

The minimum JAMB cut off mark for the University of Lagos is 200. Candidates who scored below 200 in the UTME are not eligible for UNILAG admission through the regular UTME route regardless of any other factor. However, it is important to understand that scoring 200 does not guarantee admission — it merely makes you eligible to apply. The actual score needed for competitive departments is significantly higher.

Medicine and Surgery at UNILAG, for instance, regularly sees candidates with JAMB scores above 300 competing for a very limited number of spaces. Law, Pharmacy, Computer Science, and Engineering are similarly competitive. Even in the social sciences and arts faculties, the aggregate scores of successful candidates typically far exceed the 200 general minimum.

UNILAG Post UTME

Post UTME at UNILAG is compulsory for all candidates who chose the university as first choice on JAMB and scored at or above the cut off mark. The UNILAG Post UTME is conducted as a Computer Based Test covering the four subjects in the candidate’s JAMB registration. The exam is typically 30 to 45 minutes and tests both knowledge and reasoning ability.

Registration for the Post UTME is done through the UNILAG online application portal. Candidates log in with their JAMB registration number, pay the screening fee, and receive their exam date and venue details through their candidate dashboard. The exam slip must be printed and presented at the screening venue. UNILAG Post UTME results contribute 50 percent of the candidate’s admission aggregate with JAMB contributing the remaining 50 percent.

How UNILAG Calculates Admission Aggregate

The UNILAG admission aggregate is calculated by dividing the JAMB score by 8 to produce a figure out of 50, and dividing the Post UTME score by 2 to produce another figure out of 50. Both are added to give the aggregate out of 100. A candidate with a JAMB score of 320 and a Post UTME score of 80 would have an aggregate of 40 plus 40 which equals 80 out of 100. This composite approach means Post UTME preparation is just as important as JAMB preparation for UNILAG admission.

UNILAG School Fees in 2026

As a federal university, UNILAG school fees are regulated and significantly lower than what private universities charge. The fees vary by faculty with professional programmes like Medicine, Pharmacy, Law, and Engineering attracting higher charges than arts, education, and social science programmes. The full fee schedule for each faculty is published on the university portal at the beginning of each academic session.

In addition to tuition, fresh students pay acceptance fees, library fees, faculty development levies, and other charges that make up the total first-year payment. Returning students pay annual tuition and session-specific levies. The combined cost for a year at UNILAG, including accommodation, feeding, and personal expenses in Lagos, should be factored into financial planning before resumption.

UNILAG Hostel and Accommodation

UNILAG provides on-campus hostel accommodation though the number of available spaces is far smaller than the total student population. Priority for hostel allocation typically goes to fresh students, particularly those in faculties like Medicine that require proximity to the teaching hospital. Most returning students live off-campus in surrounding neighbourhoods including Akoka, Bariga, Yaba, and further afield across Lagos.

Off-campus accommodation costs in the Lagos areas surrounding UNILAG are among the highest for any university in Nigeria, reflecting the general high cost of living in Lagos. Students should factor this into their financial planning well before resumption, as finding accommodation in Lagos without prior preparation can be both stressful and expensive.

UNILAG Admission Requirements Summary

  • Minimum JAMB score of 200 for all programmes
  • Five O’Level credits in relevant subjects including English Language from WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB in not more than two sittings
  • Mathematics at credit level for Engineering, Science, and Business programmes
  • Compulsory Post UTME screening for all eligible UTME candidates
  • Acceptance fee payment within the stated deadline upon receiving an admission offer

UNILAG Postgraduate School

The University of Lagos runs an active postgraduate school offering Masters and PhD programmes across all twelve faculties. The postgraduate school is one of the largest and most productive in Nigeria in terms of research output and the number of postgraduate students enrolled at any one time. Candidates with a minimum of Second Class Lower in a relevant discipline are generally eligible to apply for Masters programmes. PhD candidates typically need a Masters degree and a clear research proposal.

Direct Entry Into UNILAG

Candidates who hold an OND with Upper Credit or better, an NCE, A’Level passes in two relevant subjects, or a first degree can apply for UNILAG Direct Entry at 200 level. Direct Entry applications are processed through the JAMB Direct Entry system and UNILAG processes them through its own admission office. Direct Entry spaces are limited and competition for them in popular faculties can be as intense as UTME admission competition.

Full programme information, admission guidelines, and official university communications are available at the official UNILAG website at www.unilag.edu.ng.
